Adam's Needle (Yucca filamentosa)
Height, Spread: 3-8 ft, 3-5 ft
Water/Soil: Moist- occasionally dry, well-drained, neutral pH
Light: Full sun-part shade
Bloom: Spring-summer, showy white flowers
Native Range: Southeastern USA
Qualities: Attractive to pollinators, Wildlife resource, Host plant
Notes: Perennial evergreen clumping shrub commonly found in sandy or rocky soils in the southeastern coastal plain. Larval host plant for the Yucca Giant-Skipper ( Megathymus yuccae) and the Cofaqui Giant-Skipper ( Megathymus cofaqui). All yuccas have a mutualistic relationship with Yucca moths ( Tegeticula sp). Yucca moths pollinate yuccas and yucca plants house the yucca moths' eggs and eat some of its seeds when they hatch. Hummingbirds visit the flowers and songbirds and small mammals eat the seeds. A versatile plant, it can be used as an accent plant or barrier. Would make an attractive statement piece in a sunny rock garden.
