Notes: Deciduous shrub found in wetlands in the Piedmont and Coastal Plain of NC. Attractive to pollinators and a host plant for the Spring Azure butterfly (Celastrina ladon) and Hummingbird Clearwing moth (Hemaris thysbe). Birds and mammals eat its fruits, and the leaves and twigs are browsed by deer. Best planted alongside a pond or in a boggy area.
