Notes: Deciduous shrub, somewhat uncommon in wetlands and riparian areas in NC. The flowers are attractive to pollinators, and it is a host plant for the Spring Azure butterfly (Celastrina argiolus). Birds and small mammals eat its fruits, and deer will browse its foliage. Tolerant of many soil types and pHs as long as it stays moist and well-drained. Best used in a naturalized area like alongside a stream or as a foundation shrub.
