Longleaf Pine (Pinus palustris)
Height, Spread: 60-120 ft, 30-40 ft
Water/Soil: moist-occasionally dry, acidic, sand, clay
Light: Full sun
Bloom: Pollen is released in early spring
Native Range: SE USA Coastal Plain
Qualities: Host plant, Wildlife resource
Notes: Evergreen tree primarily found in the Coastal Plain and Sandhills region of NC. Unfortunately, its numbers have dwindled due to clear-cutting and fire suppression. It is a host plant to the Imperial moth (Eacles imperialis) and provides important shelter for wildlife during the winter. This tree is a good option for mass planting in a naturalized area or as a large shade tree in your yard.
