Notes: Herbaceous perennial commonly found in open woods or shaded meadows. Attractive to pollinators, it supports the specialized native bee Andrena arabis and is a larval host plant for the West Virginia white butterfly (Pieris virginiensis) and the Falcate Orangetip butterfly (Anthocharis cardamines). 'American Sweetheart' cultivar is known for its olive-colored leaves with purple backs and silver veins. Best used as a groundcover or in a wooded naturalized area, it spreads readily via rhizomes.
