Notes: Deciduous small understory tree commonly found in wetlands, lowlands, or thickets in the piedmont or coastal plain of NC. It is a host plant for Red-spotted purple and Viceroy butterflies. Its flowers are attractive to pollinators including bees and butterflies and its fruits are eaten by birds and small mammals. This tree is best planted in woodland gardens, pollinator gardens, or riparian areas.
