Notes: Deciduous tree commonly found in bottomland forests and along brownwater rivers in the Piedmont and Coastal Plain regions of NC. Attractive to pollinators, a larval host plant for the Imperial Moth (Eacles imperialism), and seeds are eaten by songbirds and small mammals. Native Americans taught early colonialists how to tap these trees to make maple syrup. Best used as a shade tree or in a naturalized woodland area.
